Danger ahead: Distracted drivers

Everyone who has driven the streets of Radcliff knows that it's a problem. You know it just as well if you have driven on Interstate 65 or the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway. Distracted driving is a growing danger, and when your vehicle and others are moving at high speeds, the risks of a car accident that causes injuries or fatalities is even greater.

The federal government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that each day, more than 1,000 Americans are injured in wrecks that involve a distracted driver. About nine people die every day in distracted driving crashes, too, the CDC says.

Just two years ago, more than 390,000 people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in which a distracted driver was involved. The death toll in 2015 was staggering as well: 3,477.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, young drivers are at greatest risk of distracted driving. In 2015, 42 percent of high school students said that they had sent texts or emails while they were behind the wheel.

Even worse, the CDC reports, are students who said they frequently sent and received texts while they were driving were less likely than others to wear seatbelts and more likely to ride with someone who had been drinking alcohol. They were also more likely than other students to drink and drive themselves.

While texting is a common distraction, other activities are just as dangerous, including talking on a phone, using a navigation system, eating, etc.

Those who have been injured in a car accident caused by a distracted driver can with the help of an experienced personal injury attorney pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, loss of future earnings, as well as pain and suffering.
